Turn Your Driveway Into a Revenue Stream: The Emerging Trend of Parking Space Rentals

As the ripple effects of a volatile economy continue to impact everyday lives, individuals are on a perennial lookout for avenues to earn some extra cash. In a city like Boston, where every square foot counts, an emerging side hustle trend is turning heads, and all it requires is an empty driveway or parking space.

Anthony Viola, a resident of Jamaica Plain, stumbled upon this opportunity when his neighbor inquired about renting his driveway space. Despite not owning a car, Anthony had never thought of monetizing the idle spot near his residence until this interaction. His subsequent online search led him to Spacer, an app hailed as the "Airbnb of monthly parking."

Parking Space Rentals

Spacer played the matchmaker, connecting Anthony with individuals desperate for a parking spot amidst the high-priced parking garages in downtown Boston. This hassle-free arrangement allowed Anthony to rake in enough every month to cover his grocery bills. However, the earning potential doesn't stop there. According to Jeremy Zuker, the CEO of Spacer North America, individuals in high-density areas are pocketing $200 or more monthly, translating to a substantial $2,400 or more annually.

The surge in such arrangements isn't just a flash in the pan. Over the last five months, Spacer has recorded a whopping 70% increase in rentals in Boston alone. The reasons are manifold, ranging from the exorbitant costs of traditional parking spots to the anticipation of snow during the winter months.

This new earning avenue isn't just about the money. It's about the convenience and assurance it brings to both parties. For hosts like Anthony, platforms like Spacer handle the payment collections and provide insurance coverage, relieving them of potential headaches. On the other hand, renters find a safe haven for their vehicles, shielded from the city's snow emergencies and the unreliable nature of public transportation.

While Spacer currently caters to monthly parking needs, there's a potential expansion on the horizon, with per diem parking for specific situations like snow emergencies under consideration. Besides Spacer, other apps like Spot Hero and Neighbor are also stepping into this domain, broadening the horizon for driveway rentals.

The simplicity of this side hustle is its biggest allure. As Anthony pointed out, the only real effort required is keeping the spot shoveled during the winter months. The rest is a digital affair, handled seamlessly by apps dedicated to this cause.

So, if you have an idle driveway and the thought of some extra cash sounds appealing, it might be time to explore the driveway rental bandwagon. With the gig economy showing no signs of slowing down, such unconventional income streams are becoming more of a norm than an exception.
