Tesla Tops the Charts as America’s Most American-Made Car

Guess what? The most American-made car isn't from Ford, GM, or Chrysler. Nope, it's Tesla that's taking the crown, and it's not just any Tesla, but the Model 3 Performance leading the pack. It might come as a surprise given how young Tesla is compared to these titans of American auto manufacturing.

Here’s the deal: When it comes to using homegrown parts and labor, Tesla’s outpacing everyone. A big shoutout to the major study from the Kogod School of Business, which shows the Model 3 Performance rocking an impressive 87.5% of its components made right here in the USA. And yes, that includes parts from our neighbors up north in Canada, as they count as domestic under the American Automobile Labeling Act.

Tesla

What’s even more interesting is Tesla’s story of innovation mixed with controversy. Despite being a powerhouse in electric vehicles, they're still relying on a good chunk of important parts like motors and batteries from abroad—China, to be specific. This global sourcing game does put them at risk, especially with the ever-changing landscape of trade policies and tariffs. Remember the trade wars? Tesla’s kind of a poster child for how tense that can get.

Tesla

But let's not just focus on the challenges. Tesla's really pushing the envelope in manufacturing. Their factories in California, Nevada, and Texas aren’t just assembly lines; they’re hubs of innovation, producing everything from batteries to the entire cars. They've got some pretty wild tech too, like their Giga Press that molds huge car parts in one go, and they’re all about that vertical integration life—controlling the whole process from raw materials to the cars rolling off the line.

Tesla

Looking to the future, Tesla's not hitting the brakes anytime soon. They’re expanding with new plants and doubling down on sourcing materials from the U.S. to keep strengthening their hold as America's top car maker by local content.

Tesla

So, while Tesla may not have the long history of Detroit’s finest, they’re redefining what it means to be an American-made car. It’s pretty awesome to think about how a company that’s just over a decade old is schooling the old guard on playing the home field!
