Let's face it – Porsche's Cayenne is a head-turner. But anyone eyeing this luxury SUV probably wonders about the hidden costs of ownership. Is maintaining this German powerhouse going to break the bank?

The Basics

Currently in its third generation, the Cayenne has been turning heads since 2003. It's now Porsche's second-best seller, with 5,331 units moved in Q1 2025 alone. The current model starts at $86,800 for the SUV and $91,900 for the coupe version. Both pack a punchy 3.0-liter six-cylinder that delivers 348 horsepower.

Common Headaches

While Cayennes are generally solid performers, a few issues tend to pop up:

  • First-gen models (2003-2008) sometimes struggle with fuel pump failures that cause starting problems or stalling
  • Thermostat housing leaks plague some 2004-2008 models
  • Tires wearing out prematurely has been reported by some owners
  • Brake pads and rotors sometimes need replacement sooner than expected

The Bottom Line: It'll Cost You

No surprises here – maintaining a Porsche isn't cheap. The average annual upkeep runs about $1,231, with the first five years of ownership potentially costing nearly $12,000 in maintenance and repairs.

Which Models to Avoid

If shopping used, be cautious about the second generation (2011-2018), particularly the 2011 model year. Issues with camshaft adjuster bolts, coolant leaks, and transfer case failures make these less desirable. The 2004 model also had its share of electrical gremlins and coolant problems.

Worth It?

For all its expense, the Cayenne remains more reliable than many luxury competitors. Yes, it costs more than average to keep running smoothly, but hey – it's a Porsche. Nothing about these German machines comes cheap. For many owners, the driving experience makes the maintenance bills worthwhile.
