Over 700,000 Ford Broncos Probed For Massive Engine Failures

It all began as an investigation into complaints regarding a few Broncos equipped with Ford's 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine. Now, things escalated into a broader Engineering Analysis encompassing 708,837 trucks and SUVs fitted with either the 2.7-liter or the 3.0-liter EcoBoost engines.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) made this announcement following data provided by Ford.
The probe covers various models, including the 2022 Bronco, 2021-2022 F-150, 2021-2022 Edge, 2021-2022 Lincoln Nautilus, 2021-2022 Ford Explorers, and Lincoln Aviators. Ford shared data indicating 328 customer complaints, 487 warranty claims, and 809 engine exchanges, with power loss being the most common consequence of these engine failures.
The issue likely stems from potential fractures in the intake valves due to factors like the type of alloy used, potentially leading to significant engine failure and endangering vehicle occupants. The Engineering Analysis seeks to assess the problem's extent, evaluate returned parts, analyze the impact on engine longevity, and assess Ford's response, particularly the alloy change in valve construction initiated in 2021. While a recall isn't mandated at this stage, depending on the Engineering Analysis results, one may be deemed necessary.
