Maybach vs. Mercedes: Why the Ultra-Luxury Sub-Brand Costs So Much More
by AutoExpert | 14 July, 2025
So everyone's always arguing about Maybach versus Mercedes, right? But here's the thing that throws people off – Maybach isn't even its own brand anymore. It's basically just Mercedes showing off.
How We Got Here
This whole story is kind of backwards. Most people think Mercedes came first, but actually Wilhelm Maybach started his company in 1919, years before Mercedes-Benz even existed as a name. The guy had worked with the Mercedes founders before but decided to branch out on his own.

Fast forward to the 2000s, and Maybach was doing their own thing with these massive luxury cars called the 57 and 62. They were pretty sweet, but nobody was buying them. So in 2012, Mercedes basically said "forget it" and killed off the brand.
Then something interesting happened. In 2015, Mercedes brought Maybach back – but not really. Instead of making it a separate company, they just slapped the Maybach name on their fanciest S-Class models. Smart move, actually.

What's Different Now
The main difference is your bank account will hurt way more with a Maybach. A regular Mercedes S-Class already costs more than most people's houses, but throw "Maybach" on there and suddenly you're looking at almost double the price.
Take their SUV situation. The regular GLS starts around $89K, which is already pretty crazy. But the Maybach version? That'll run you $178K. And what do you get for that extra $90,000? Well, champagne holders made of actual silver. Because apparently regular champagne holders are for peasants.

The Current Lineup
Mercedes is doing this Maybach thing with three models right now:
The S-Class is where this whole revival started. Regular one costs about $128K, but the Maybach jumps to over $200K. The top model with the V12 engine hits $240K. For that money, you get things like cupholders that heat and cool your drinks. Not even kidding.
The GLS SUV is for people who want to haul seven people in ridiculous luxury. It's got a 550-horsepower V8 and leather covering basically everything, including the ceiling. They're going after Bentley buyers who want something a bit more practical.
The EQS Electric SUV is their newest baby. Regular version is $128K, Maybach bumps it to $180K. It makes 649 horsepower, which is bonkers for an electric SUV. And yes, it still has those champagne holders.

Is This Madness Worth It?
Look, if someone's dropping $200K on a car, they're probably not worried about getting their money's worth. Most of these Maybach features are completely ridiculous – like, who needs a refrigerator in their car? But that's kind of the point.
The regular S-Class is already loaded with everything a normal human could want. Going Maybach is really about one-upping your neighbor who bought a Bentley. It's luxury for luxury's sake, with some impressive German engineering underneath all the fancy leather.

The whole thing is pretty brilliant, actually. Mercedes figured out how to compete with Rolls-Royce and Bentley without starting a whole new company. Just take what they already make, add some absurd features, and charge twice as much. And apparently, it's working.
