Highway Sign Secrets: How Businesses Get on Those Blue Roadside Signs

You know those signs, the ones pointing you towards gas, food, or a hotel when you're about to pass out on the highway? There's actually a whole system behind them, and some serious money involved. Turns out, it's not just random!

The Basics

  • Mainline Sign: That's the first big one, just letting you know stuff's nearby.
  • Ramp Sign: Closer to the exit, tells you if you need to go right or left. If you can already see the place from the highway, they might not get one of these.
  • Trailblazer Sign: The tiny ones at the next turn, making sure you don't get lost.

Who Gets on 'Em?

Mostly the basics for road trips: gas, food, lodging. Think rest stops with chains, not your cute local diner. Oh, and touristy stuff like museums can get on there too, but no churches or movie theaters. Here's the things they all need:

  • Bathrooms! (Gotta be public ones, not just for customers)
  • Drinking Water
  • Public Phone (Yeah, this rule is kinda old-fashioned)

Some states care about how close you are to the exit, or if you're open all day, that kinda thing.

Okay, How Do You Apply?

States have online forms, so that part's easy. Actually getting a spot, though? Good luck! Big cities, those signs are FULL. Some places have waiting lists for years!

It Ain't Cheap

Prices are all over the place. Some states it's a few hundred bucks per year, others it's THOUSANDS. Usually you gotta pay for each direction of the highway you want to be on. If it's a super rural area with empty signs, they might practically give it away just to fill the space.

Wait, Why Does This Even Exist?

Honestly, it started as a way to get rid of billboards. People HATED how those looked cluttering up the scenery. These blue signs are a compromise – businesses get to advertise, but the signs are standardized, easier to ignore if you're not looking.

Bonus Fun Fact: Those big blue signs? They're WAY bigger than you think while driving by!
