California Introduces Road Charge Pilot: Pay-Per-Mile System to Replace Gas Tax

Dude, California's gas is CRAZY expensive, and guess what? It's hurting our roads! And EVs (yeah, we love them and appreciate their "green" nature) are adding up to that expensiveness.

So, the Golden State is cooking up a new plan called the California Road Charge.  Instead of paying gas tax, you'd pay a few cents per mile you drive.  Think of it like a fitness tracker for your car – it tracks the miles, and the state sends you a bill (don't worry, they're still working on the exact price, somewhere between 2 and 4 cents a mile).

Here's the kicker: some folks might actually save money!  Cruise around in a gas guzzler like a Honda Pilot? You could be paying less than you do now!  EV drivers, though, might see a bump in their costs since they're not coughing up gas tax anymore.

California's starting a test run this August to see if the Road Charge works.  They're looking for volunteers (who get to try it out for free, with bonus gift cards!), and the data will help them decide if this is the future of paying for our roads.
