Are Advanced Car Features Like ACC Worth It? Unpacking the Safety Data

So, you've probably heard about all these fancy car features like adaptive cruise control (ACC) and automatic emergency braking (AEB), right? Well, while AEB is set to be a must-have in cars by 2029, there's a bit of skepticism about how much partial automation actually prevents crashes.

Recent studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) are throwing some shade on the real safety boosts of systems like ACC compared to good old AEB. They took a hard look at crash and insurance data for some popular models and found that, well, the proof is a bit thin on the ground.

The deal is, while these partial automation features are becoming common—even in budget-friendly rides—they might not be the crash-preventing heroes they're touted to be. The IIHS checked out vehicles like some Nissans and BMWs, which have been under the microscope before, and their latest findings aren’t all that reassuring. Despite earlier studies, the new data shows that while AEB and forward collision warnings can reduce property damage and collision claims (think 8% to 25% better outcomes), the fancier ACC systems? Not so much.

Advanced Car Features

For example, the Nissan Rogue models with just AEB saw fewer insurance claims for property damage compared to those kitted out with Nissan’s ProPILOT Assist, which includes lane-centering and ACC. The latter didn’t really add any extra safety benefits over AEB alone.

And here’s another kicker: the effectiveness of these systems wasn’t consistent. It varied depending on the type of road and whether it was day or night. For crashes in the dark, the difference seemed to come from having better headlights rather than the automation features.

Advanced Car Features

It turns оut that these advanced systems, like ACC, might make you feel like yоu're driving a semi-autоnomous car, but they're nоt foolproof. They can’t handle every traffic situation, and there’s a real risk that they cоuld lull drivers into a false sense of security. You might start paying less attention, which is definitely not what you want when you're zipping along the highway.

Advanced Car Features

So, what's the takeaway? While tech in cars is advancing and can help prevent some types of accidents, it's no substitute for staying alert and keeping those eyes on the road. It’s cool tech, for sure, but let’s not get carried away thinking we’re in the era of full self-driving cars just yet.
