All About The New 7.3-liter V8 In The 2020 Ford Super Duty

Ford unveiled a brand-new engine choice for its redesigned 2020 Super Duty line of pickups earlier this year. The company has now disclosed the output figures, and they are encouraging. Maximum output from the 7.3-liter V8 gasoline engine is 430 hp at 5,500 rpm, with class-leading torque of 475 lb-ft available from 4,000 rpm.

The new V8 has a forged steel crankshaft, piston cooling jets, variable-displacement oil pump, and extra-large main bearings for improved temperature control under load. The design is based on the tried-and-true overhead-valve layout.

Actually, the new engine will come in two different power levels. The 350 horsepower and 468 lb-ft torque unit will be standard on the F-450 chassis cab, F-550, the new F-600, F-650, and F-750 Medium Duty trucks, the F-53 and F-59 stripped chassis models and the improved E-Series. The F-250 and F-350 pickups will get the 450-hp version in addition to the 6.2-liter V8 and 6.7-liter V8 diesel now on sale.

Joel Beltramo, Ford manager for gas engines, says, “The 7.3-liter is designed for maximum durability in the harshest environments given that our customers live and work in these conditions every day. This engine has the largest displacement in its class and is designed to provide benefits in key areas like power, durability, ease of maintenance, and total operating costs.”

Except for the F-650 and F-750, which will continue to use the 6-speed heavy-duty automatic, the new 7.3-liter engine alternative will be paired with Ford's new 10-speed automatic transmission. Power Takeoff, formerly an optional extra, is now standard on 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel-powered vehicles for the 2020 model year.
