This Tiny BMW-Backed EV Could Finish Your Commute With More Energy Than It Started

Solar panels on cars have always sounded like a great idea, although the reality has usually been less impressive. A few extra miles from sitting in the sun is nice, but hardly enough to change how you use an EV. Clemson University and BMW have now built a tiny prototype that takes the idea much further.
Called Luminetta, the car was developed by 16 graduate students alongside BMW's research and development team.

More than 1,700 photovoltaic cells cover its body, collecting sunlight while the car is parked and moving. The project was designed around a 12-mile daily commute, and Clemson says the solar system can produce more energy than the car needs over a typical day. In some locations, the surplus could equal around 31 miles of extra range.
There is a pretty big reason those numbers work, though. Luminetta weighs just 1,212 lbs, making it dramatically lighter than a normal production EV. Its structure combines steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, and 3D-printed metal joints, while regenerative braking and carefully managed power delivery help keep energy use low. It also looks like something you might find in a university design studio rather than a showroom, which somehow makes the whole experiment even more interesting.

Clemson and Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE tested the concept in Greenville, Frankfurt, Madrid, and Mumbai. Turning this into a production car would be much harder once you add passengers, luggage, safety equipment, air conditioning, and plenty of extra weight. Still, Luminetta raises an interesting question: if solar panels could quietly add useful range every day, would you actually want them on your next EV?
