EU's New Rule: Every Car to Have a 'Black Box' by July 2024

Hey everyone, guess what's happening over in Europe with new cars? Starting in July 2024, every new car rolling out in the EU is going to have its own 'black box', kind of like what you find in airplanes. And it's not just for cars – this goes for smaller trucks and vans too!

These black boxes are actually bright orange (funny, right?), so they’re easy to spot after any mishaps. What they’re planning is to fit all the new passenger cars (you know, the ones that can fit a bunch of your friends plus the driver) and commercial vehicles like pickup trucks and vans (as long as they aren’t too heavy) with this gadget called an "Event Data Recorder" or EDR for short.

Black Box

The EU's made up of a bunch of countries – 27 to be exact – and they’ve already said that no new car can hit the road without one of these EDRs since July 2022.

So, what's the deal with these EDRs? They're basically like the black box's nosy cousin. They keep tabs on things like how fast you were going, whether you hit the brakes, and the position of your car right before and after a crash. It’s like having a mini detective on board to figure out what went down if there's a bump.

Black Box

The EDR also checks if you used the car’s emergency call system (that’s been a must-have in the EU since 2018). It keeps all this info really safe, so it sticks around even after a crash. It records your car’s make and model and all the safety features it has. The best part? It’s wired into the airbag system, so it springs into action automatically when things go south.

Now, you might be thinking, "Who gets to look at all this stuff?" Well, the data technically belongs to you, the driver, or the car owner. It's kept super secure and anonymous, so you don't have to worry about your info getting out there. Only the right authorities can peek at the data, and that's usually just for accident investigations.

Black Box

And here’s a fun fact – over in the US, most new cars already have these EDRs. There's no rule saying they must, but around 99.5% of new cars there come with one. The government thought about making it a must-have, but since the carmakers were already on it, they let it be.

So there you have it – from 2024, driving a new car in Europe will be a bit like flying, with your very own black box along for the ride!
