Toyota Could Make Its Biggest Corolla Change in Decades — And Kill the Traditional Sedan

Toyota has sold more than 131,000 Corollas in the U.S. during the first half of this year, even though the current model is getting close to a decade old. A new generation is coming, and it could bring some big changes.

The biggest one may be the body style. Reports suggest Toyota could replace the sedan with a liftback, combining the sedan and hatchback into one model. This would also help Toyota reduce the number of different versions in its lineup.

The new Corolla is expected to use an updated TNGA-C platform. The hybrid could get a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder making around 134 hp, with fuel economy improving by as much as 10 to 20 percent. All-wheel drive could remain an option.

Toyota may also offer a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric Corolla. The EV could get dual-motor AWD and at least 250 miles of range. Gas versions could use turbocharged 1.5- or 2.0-liter engines, while the GR Corolla could get a 2.0-liter turbo with up to 395 hp.

Toyota already previewed the new design with a Corolla concept in 2025, followed by another teaser this summer. Nothing is official yet, but it looks like the Corolla may finally be ready to break out of its familiar sedan shape.
