Maserati’s Next Electric Vehicles Could Be Part Maserati, Part Huawei, Part JAC

Maserati could be getting some unexpected help from China. Reports say the Italian brand has reached an agreement with Huawei and JAC to develop two new models.

The three companies started talking about a possible partnership back in May. At the time, nothing was settled. Now, however, reports suggest they have agreed on a plan. The cars would be sold as Maextro models in China and as Maseratis in other markets.

The first two models are expected to be an electric SUV and an electric GT. The SUV could take the place of the Grecale Folgore, while the GT would join the GranTurismo Folgore in the lineup.

JAC would handle the engineering and build the cars at its existing Maextro factory. Huawei would provide the technology, including its Qiankun driving system, electric powertrain, and infotainment setup. Maserati would take care of the design and sales.

The production process sounds a little unusual. JAC would build the car bodies in China and then send them to Italy for final assembly. So, even though a lot of the work would happen in China, Maserati would still finish the cars at home.

The new models could be sold in Italy, France, Germany, and the Middle East. In China, they would carry Maextro badges instead.

Maserati could use the extra help. The brand sold just 7,900 cars in 2025, compared with 11,300 a year earlier. It was the company’s weakest sales year since the early 2010s.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about the deal, but the idea itself is clear. Maserati would get Huawei’s technology and JAC’s manufacturing support while focusing on the parts that matter most to the brand, including design and sales.
