You Can Soon Race a Caterham for $14.75 a Month Instead of Spending $60,000

Want to go racing in a Caterham without buying a race car, trailer, and a very expensive helmet? Soon, you can do it from your sim rig. Caterham is teaming up with iRacing to bring two of its most popular track cars into the racing simulator, giving virtual drivers a chance to sample some proper lightweight motorsport.

The partnership arrives with iRacing’s 2026 Season 4 and adds digital versions of the Caterham Seven Academy and Seven 420R. The Academy car is the gentler starting point, using a Horse Technologies 1.3-liter turbocharged engine with around 130 hp. In the real world, it forms the basis of Caterham’s UK Academy series, which gives newcomers a relatively direct route into competitive racing.

For drivers who want something a little more serious, there’s the Seven 420R. This track-only Caterham uses a motorsport-tuned 2.0-liter Ford engine producing 180 hp and sends its power through a six-speed sequential gearbox. Like the real car, the virtual version should be all about low weight, simple mechanics, and getting the driver involved.

The timing also makes sense as grassroots motorsport becomes harder to afford. Racing costs can climb quickly, and even karting can run into huge sums for families trying to support a young driver. Sim racing offers a way to learn tracks, race other drivers, and experience competition without immediately taking on the cost of a real race program. Caterham hopes that experience eventually works in reverse, with virtual drivers wanting to try a real Seven.

There’s still a pretty big gap between the two worlds, though. iRacing memberships start at $14.75 per month, while cars and tracks cost extra. A real Caterham Academy campaign is in a completely different financial league, costing around $60,000 (£44,995) in the UK. That package includes the car, a race license, a full season of race weekends, and technical support.
