Tesla Model S Designer Takes Delivery Of 1,020-HP Signature Edition #001

What would the man who designed the Tesla Model S do with the very first example of its final edition? In Franz von Holzhausen’s case, the answer is simple: protect it and leave the design alone.

Tesla’s longtime design chief took delivery of Model S Plaid Signature Edition #001, the first of just 250 cars. Before putting serious miles on it, he brought the car to Unplugged Performance in California for a full protection treatment.

The team started with a deep wash to remove transport dirt, iron particles, and other contaminants. They then covered the body with paint protection film, carefully working around the exterior panels to keep the finish clean and seamless.

Next came a ceramic coating for the paint and trim. It helps repel water and dirt while keeping the Garnet Red finish glossy. The glass also received protective film that blocks 99% of UV rays and 98% of infrared heat. Von Holzhausen kept the factory bodywork untouched, which makes sense for a car that already marks the end of the Model S era.

The Signature Edition costs $159,420 and uses Tesla’s 1,020-hp tri-motor setup. It also gets 21-inch Velarium wheels, gold badges, gold brake calipers, carbon-ceramic brakes, white Alcantara, and a yoke steering wheel. Von Holzhausen previously gave his own Model 3 upgraded suspension and brakes, so he clearly enjoys tweaking his Teslas. This time, though, the designer seems more interested in preserving his car than changing it.
