Smart #2 Returns With 180 Miles Of Range And A Retro-Inspired Design

Remember the Smart Fortwo? The tiny two-seater that could squeeze into parking spaces most cars wouldn’t even attempt? It’s finally getting a successor. Smart has unveiled the new #2 at the Paris Motor Show, bringing back the car that helped build its reputation.
The recipe hasn’t changed much: two seats, a tiny body, and a shape that’s instantly recognizable. The new model looks more modern, with redesigned headlights, round taillights, and cleaner bumpers. It’s still a Smart, just with a fresh look for a new generation.

At 108.1 inches long, the #2 remains seriously small. It’s a little longer than the old Fortwo, but it can still turn around in a tight 6.95-meter circle. That should come in handy when navigating narrow streets or escaping a cramped parking spot. Inside, there’s a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, an 8.8-inch digital instrument display, and 305 liters of cargo space.
Buyers can choose from Pure, Pure+ and Premium versions. The range-topping model gets heated seats, a glass roof, faux leather upholstery, and a seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system.

The #2 is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor with 81 hp and 95.9 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers won’t set anyone’s pulse racing, but that’s hardly the point.
Its 35.8 kWh LFP battery offers a claimed WLTP range of 180 miles, more than twice what the old EQ Fortwo managed. Charging from 10% to 80% takes around 20 minutes with a suitable 65 kW DC fast charger. The car can also power external devices through its vehicle-to-load function.

Mercedes designed the car, while Geely developed its electric platform. Smart has also fitted a five-link rear suspension and a low center of gravity, along with driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. There’s even a special #2 Couture Edition, limited to 999 units in Europe. With matte white paint, a gold roof, and matching wheel details, it gives the little EV a more distinctive look.

Smart hasn’t announced official prices yet, although reports suggest the #2 could start at £17,900 in the UK. It will face rivals such as the Dacia Spring and the upcoming electric Renault Twingo. The new model will also be sold in China and other markets. After a two-year gap, Smart is finally returning to what it does best. The #2 won’t be for everyone, but for drivers tired of oversized cars and endless parking struggles, a tiny electric runabout might be just the thing.
