The Mercedes Vito Sport-X Looks Like An AMG Van, But It Isn't

Why do British buyers love sporty vans so much? Mercedes has another answer. Meet the Vito Sport-X, a UK-only version that gives a practical diesel van the visual treatment of a performance car while keeping its workhorse hardware intact.

Mercedes starts with the Vito Crew Van Select and focuses almost entirely on appearance. A redesigned front bumper brings larger air intakes and an integrated splitter, while a honeycomb grille carries the Sport-X emblem. Racing stripes across the hood add another layer of drama.

The side gets new skirts and matte-black Sport-X graphics. Then we can spot the 19-inch black alloy wheels with white rings, which probably do more for the van’s attitude than anything else. At the rear, Mercedes adds a roof spoiler, tinted LED taillights, and Sport-X lettering. The company wisely skips the fake diffuser, and the exhaust remains tucked underneath.

Alpine Grey features on the launch car, but buyers can choose from several other colors, including Arctic White, Sodalite Blue, Obsidian Black, Kalahari Gold, High Tech Silver, Graphite Grey, and Hyacinth Red.

Inside, Mercedes gives the Sport-X a more serious makeover. Two bucket seats replace the standard front bench, and each seat gets an integrated headrest and Sport-X branding. Black eco-leather and dark-grey suede cover the seats, with orange stitching adding a small hit of color. The three second-row seats follow the same theme.

The equipment list also goes beyond what you usually expect from a commercial van. Heated seats and a heated steering wheel come along with electric front seats with memory, wireless phone charging, a reversing camera, several driver-assistance systems, and an Anti-Theft Package.

The dashboard still reminds you where the Vito came from. Hard plastics cover much of the cabin, and the infotainment screen looks small next to the displays you find in newer Mercedes models. The Vito sits firmly below the luxury-focused VLE in both technology and presentation.

The mechanical side stays completely familiar. A 2.0-liter turbodiesel produces 187 hp and 325 lb-ft, while a nine-speed automatic sends power to the rear wheels. Mercedes quotes a 0-62 mph time of 10 seconds.

The Sport-X also keeps the standard Vito’s useful abilities. Buyers can choose L2 or L3 body lengths, remove the rear bench when they need extra cargo space, carry up to 733 kg, and use 4.1 cubic meters of load volume. The van can also tow up to 2,500 kg.

Mercedes will start deliveries in the UK in September, with prices from £56,995 before VAT. That puts the Sport-X alongside a growing collection of sporty commercial vans, including the VW Transporter Sportline, Vauxhall Vivaro GS, Fiat Scudo Onyx, Peugeot Expert Sport, Citroen Dispatch Sport, and Ford Transit Custom MS-RT.
