Jaguar’s New Type 01 Interior Barely Has Any Buttons or Even a Rear Window

Jaguar has finally shown us what happens when its bold Type 00 concept moves closer to production. The Type 01 keeps the concept’s unusual spirit inside the cabin, with a long central spine, almost no physical controls, and plenty of hidden tech. It looks nothing like the typical luxury EV interior, and that seems to be exactly what Jaguar wants.

The four-seat layout immediately sets the Type 01 apart. A large central structure runs from the dashboard toward the rear and splits the cabin into two distinct sides. Jaguar also lowers the seating position to create a snug, driver-focused feel.

The dashboard follows the same minimalist approach. Instead of putting a huge infotainment screen in the middle, Jaguar gives the driver one large digital display that handles the instruments, navigation, and other key functions. The front passenger gets no dedicated screen either.

Jaguar also replaces the traditional rearview mirror with its ClearSight Rear View Display. A small touchscreen rises from the center console and controls the climate and media functions. Around the two-spoke steering wheel, haptic controls replace most of the buttons you’d normally expect to find.

In fact, the cabin contains remarkably few physical controls. The window switches stand out as some of the only familiar buttons in the photos.

Jaguar also wants the interior to reveal its technology gradually. The company promises hidden storage areas and features that appear only when you need them. The floating center tunnel creates more visual space, while ambient lighting runs along the doors. A panoramic glass roof adds even more openness.

Then there’s the rear window, or rather the lack of one. Jaguar follows the approach used by cars such as the Polestar 4 and Avatr 12 and relies on cameras instead of a conventional rear windscreen.

The materials give the cabin a completely different mood. Jaguar takes inspiration from travertine stone and textured fabrics, then combines cream and brown upholstery with brass details. The door panels feature Jaguar leaper emblems, while long graphic lines connect the visual theme from the hood into the dashboard.

The steering wheel carries the same design language, which gives the whole cabin a slightly retro-futuristic feel. Some people will probably love it. Others may wonder where all the normal controls went. Either way, Jaguar has clearly decided that the Type 01 needs its own identity.

The technology underneath the cabin looks just as serious. The Type 01 uses Jaguar’s new JEA electric platform and a 120-kWh battery. Three electric motors drive all four wheels and produce more than 986 hp, along with 959 lb-ft of torque. Jaguar expects more than 400 miles of EPA range and around 435 miles under the WLTP cycle.

The Jaguar Type 01 prototype will appear at Pebble Beach on August 16 with fresh camouflage. Jaguar plans to reveal the production car in New York on October 6.

The exterior already pushed Jaguar into unfamiliar territory. Now the interior shows that the company has no intention of playing it safe inside, either.
