BYD's New Tai 9 Is Bigger Than An X7 And GLS, With 536 HP From Two Motors

China’s big-SUV obsession is getting seriously out of hand, and BYD’s Fangchengbao has decided to join in with something enormous. The new Tai 9 is a three-row flagship that mixes luxury, brute size, and off-road attitude. On paper, it sounds like the kind of SUV that wants to do everything at once.

The dimensions alone make the point. The Tai 9 stretches 207.4 inches long, 78.7 inches wide, and 72.8 inches tall, with a 123.2-inch wheelbase. That puts it in the same league as the Zeekr 9X and gives it more length than the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS.

The styling has plenty of personality too, with squared wheel arches, black cladding, side steps, roof rails and a wraparound LED light bar. The black-and-gold finish adds a touch of old-school luxury, while the high ground clearance keeps the rugged Fangchengbao character intact.

The powertrain gets even more interesting. A 1.5-liter turbocharged engine produces 147 hp and works as a generator for a 66.5-kWh battery. Two electric motors each make 268 hp, giving the Tai 9 a dual-motor setup. BYD hasn’t revealed the combined output yet, but the SUV can cover up to 192 miles on electric power. It also supports BYD’s 1,500-kW Flash Charging technology, which sounds almost ridiculous for a vehicle this large.

The cabin should bring its own personality. Fangchengbao will offer a 2+2+2 layout, with spy shots showing a digital cluster and a large dashboard display. If the final interior follows the same bold direction, the Tai 9 could feel like a proper flagship from the moment you open the door.
