Bentley Torcal Will Have The World's First 100% Merino Wool Car Interior

Bentley has found a way to make an electric SUV sound surprisingly cozy. The upcoming Torcal will bring something you won’t find in any other production car: a cabin trimmed in 100% Merino wool. And yes, Bentley is serious about it.

The company worked with British textile specialist Fox Brothers to create a wool fabric tough enough for automotive use. Merino wool has plenty of luxury appeal thanks to its softness and natural warmth, but durability has kept it out of car interiors.

Bentley says the new material meets the demands of a luxury vehicle and has earned full certification under the Responsible Wool Standard. Buyers will get six carefully selected color combinations, with each one using shades from the same family for a layered look.

The wool isn’t the only unusual material inside the Torcal. Bentley will also offer a new Ombre Veneer made from sustainably sourced walnut off-cuts and recycled paper. Up to 1,000 individual layers come together before Bentley slices the finished material into pieces less than a millimeter thick.

The result moves from deep black through dark and light smoke shades before reaching natural walnut. Mulliner will also offer Sunburst Aluminum, a modern take on the engine-turned aluminum dashboards Bentley used in the past. Add the curved display and new mood selector, and the cabin should feel more like a luxury lounge than a typical EV.

Underneath, the Torcal shares its basic architecture with the Porsche Cayenne Electric, although Bentley gives it completely different front and rear styling. The Cayenne offers battery options and power outputs ranging from 435 hp to 1,139 hp, while the Bentley could land around 800 hp. We’ll have to wait until September 23 for the full reveal.
